My dear friend Jaimie is brilliant, gorgeous, funny, and also dabbles heavily in career counseling. She helps first generation college students succeed and excel at college and life. She was leading a workshop the other day on Life Mapping and sent me some pictures. I was inspired to do my own Life Map.
Life Mapping allows you to look at your Life Plan vs. your Life Reality.
As a planner I loved this exercise!
My Life Plan was simple and wonderful and oh so organized.
My Life Reality on the other hand, not so much.
My Life Reality is messy and full of heartbreak, sidesteps, and a shortness of creativity.
Obviously this is a simplized version of my Life Reality, I have clearly left out a lot in my late 20’s early 30’s. However, my life has not gone how I planned. I have come to realize, through a lot of therapy, that is okay.
I spent much of my 20’s obsessively checking off boxes: grad school – check, teach – check, get married – check, grad school again – check. By all accounts I was successful and on track. However, I was so unhappy.
I am happier now, despite going through a divorce in grad school and taking way longer than I anticipated to graduate.
I am living in the moment and excited for what my Life Reality will be in the next 6 years and beyond.
